LONG-TERM COMMITMENT

LASVP’s investment model takes a long-term perspective. Building the capacity, or operating strength, of nonprofits requires “patient capital.” Therefore, our relationships with investees typically span 3-4 years. We also concentrate our resources by making only two to three investments per year in Los Angeles-based nonprofits. Our financial investments are grants: we do not seek a financial return.
As engaged, social investors, we ask:

What results (outcomes) are we seeking?
What is the likelihood that those results will be achieved?
Is this the best possible use of the money?
How can we help ensure success?

INVESTMENT FOCUS AREA: EDUCATION

Each year, our Partners choose an investment focus area, based on community needs and our Partners’ interests. Our focus since 2005 has been public education. The public school system in Los Angeles is in a state of crisis. In South Los Angeles, of the 4,000 students who enter high school each year, only 1,500 graduate. And many of those who do graduate are victims of a system that has undereducated them, leaving them unprepared for college-level work and unqualified for many jobs.

As we talked to experts in the field, it became clear that successful charter schools offer an immediate solution for today’s students. As a result, we chose to focus on charter school organizations for our first investments.

As an alternative form of public school with more flexibility to develop innovative curricula and organizations, charter schools offer students in Los Angeles an opportunity for a better education NOW. Charter school leaders must successfully achieve both rigorous student education goals and operational viability. LASVP can help these leaders develop the entrepreneurial, financial, and management skills necessary to attain long-term educational success and business success.

2007 Focus: Public Charter Schools and the Environment
In late 2007, LASVP selected new investees in both the education (charter school) and environmental sectors.
