The mission of KIPP LA Schools is to teach the academic skills, foster the intellectual habits, and cultivate the character traits needed for our students to thrive in high school, college, and life. Through the success of our students, the KIPP LA team and family will serve as a model of excellence and collaborate with others to raise the quality of education in Los Angeles.

KIPP LA Schools is part of the larger KIPP network of schools that began in 1994. Currently, there are 66 schools in 19 states and Washington D.C., serving more than 18,000 students. Nationally, more than 80 percent of KIPP alumni have gone on to college. KIPP LA currently operates three high-quality schools: KIPP Academy of Opportunity ("KAO", opened in 2003), KIPP LA Prep ("LA Prep",  opened in 2003), and KIPP Raíces Academy (opened in 2008). These three schools have a combined enrollment of 770 students.  Its students are 58% Hispanic, 49% African-American, and 84% are eligible for the free-or-reduced lunch program.

KIPP LA plans to expand to 14 schools – seven elementary and seven middle schools - by 2016. At full enrollment in 2020, KIPP LA will serve approximately 6,100 students. Based on current economic and education data, this expansion will nearly double the number of college graduates from South and East Los Angeles, from an estimated 396 to 759 annually.

In June 2008, the California Charter Schools Association named KAO and LA Prep among the top five performing charter schools within LAUSD. KAO ranked third, and LA Prep ranked fifth (based on 2007 results). Further, KAO was ranked as the top performing charter school focused on African-American students.
